04/14/2009"Ponderosa Building Materials Software Goes Green to Support the Forest Stewardship Council’s (FSC) Chain of Custody Certification"
April 14, 2009 — Computer Associates, Inc. today announced that it has enhanced its Ponderosa Lumber, Building Materials and Millwork distribution software to help its clients secure and maintain the Forest Stewardship Council’s (FSC) new Chain of Custody (CoC) certification. This certification, part of the FSC’s effort to promote sustainable worldwide forest management, establishes a strict set of principles and standards that span economic, social, and environmental concerns.

Chain of Custody (COC) certification recognizes that the materials are harvested from properly managed, sustainable FSC-certified sources and ensure that the forest management and business techniques comply with agreed FSC principles. Once certified, companies may utilize the highly recognized FSC Certification Seal, guaranteeing consumers that the products being produced originate from a responsibly managed forest.

The new Ponderosa software enhancements enable distributors to cost-effectively meet the FSC’s requirements related to product traceability, storage and handling, invoicing, and record keeping. The software tracks material from the certified source through the entire manufacturing process, and generates a detailed audit of the certified products produced.

Jim McCooey, president of Computer Associates, developers of the Ponderosa software said, “As governments and businesses increasingly specify FSC-certified materials in their purchasing programs, Chain of Custody-certified distributors can realize a host of benefits, including the ability to meet growing customer demands for proof of environmentally-friendly products and harvesting procedures, increased market potential by using sustainable products and the ability to help protect and renew global forests by participating in sustainable forestry practices.”

When certified material is purchased, the material must include the supplier’s CoC certification code and the FSC claim of the material (e.g. FSC Pure, FSC Mixed or FSC Recycled). Once the material has been received, it must be warehoused separately from other, non-certified stock and be easily recognizable to staff by its FSC status. The Ponderosa software transfers or ‘repeats’ the required certification coding to your invoices, shipping documents and other documents related to the material.

When manufacturing FSC-certified products, Ponderosa tracks the material inputs and outputs, including any material losses, to show that you have not sold more FSC product than you purchased or produced. What’s more, Ponderosa seamlessly handles the record-keeping mandates of the FSC, including the quantity of the product purchased, the quantity of the product sold, your supplier’s invoices and packing slips, invoices to your clients, FSC training records and a list of all FSC jobs.
